Aleksander
Chmiel, Prof., Dr. habil., Ph.D., Engin
Aleksander Chmiel graduated in food chemistry and technology in 1969 at the
Technical University in Lodz, Poland, and obtained his Ph.D. in 1973 in discipline
of technical microbiology at that University. In 1977 he was started working
at the Medical Univeristy of Lodz as Head of the Department of Biosynthesis
of Drugs. During the period from 1988 to 1991 he was Deputy Director (for biotechnology)
in the Microbiology and Virology Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences in
Lodz. Since 1993 he is profesor of the pharmaceutical biotechnology at the Faculty
of Pharmacy, Medical University of Lodz. He is the member of editorial staff
of the Polish journal "Biotechnologia". Main research areas are: biosynthesis
of pharmacologically active compounds, microbial cell immobilization, plant
cell/tissue biotechnology, bioreactors for microorganisms, plant cell suspensions
and hairy root cultures. His publications include over 60 articles, 3 books
and 2 book chapters.
