Prof. Dr. Klaus Cichutek studied biochemistry and chemistry at Münster University and received his Ph.D. 1984 in biochemistry. As DFG scholarship holder he worked 1985-1988 in the field of tumor biology in the Department Molecular Biology and Virus Laboratory at the University of California, Berkley, USA. From 1988-1994 he headed the research group "Molecular Biology" at the
Paul-Ehrlich-Institut (PEI), Langen, and was senior researcher for the AIDS center. After his habilitation in 1992 he was director of the department "Medicinal Biotechnology" at the PEI. He was nominated in 1998 as "apl. Prof." in the faculty of biochemistry of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, Frankfurt. Since October 2001 he is Vice President of the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut, Langen.
Main research areas are HIV/SIV-infections, SIV-pathogenesis and AIDS, gene therapy, viral vectors, cell targeting, stem cell transfer, genetic immunisation for cancer and AIDS. He is also working in the drug regulation process and main topics are regulation of gene transfer systems including DNA vaccines, somatic gene therapy, xenotransplantation and biotech drugs.
He has published more than 60 full papers in the area of virology and gene therapy, 14 patent applications, 4 patents, and he was giving more than 90 oral presentations at national and international congresses. He is member of the advisory board of Current Opinion in Biotechnology, Gene Therapy and Regulation, BundesgesundÐheitsblatt and member in numerous scientific organisations and committees. Since 2002 he is chairperson of the "Gene Therapy Expert Group" of the European Agency for Evaluation of Medicinal Products (CPMP/EMEA).
